We know Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow can fight — even with her hands tied behind her back — but what about the other high-profile woman on the S.H.I.E.L.D. team, Maria Hill (How I Met Your Mother‘s Cobie Smulders)? A new Avengers clip, which Smulders debuted on The Late Show with David Letterman last night, shows Hill in a (verbal) scrap with her boss, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), over whether it’s safe or even possible to evacuate due to the unstable Tesseract. At least, I think that’s what they’re talking about. Check it out below:

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on” — that is some stirring Whedonspeak if I ever heard it. In fact, as photo editor Jef Cifra-Castro points out, the fancy syntax in Nick Fury’s order to Maria Hill evokes a different commander from the Whedonverse: Nathan Fillion’s Mal Reynolds. In other news, EW is staffed by ginormous geeks.
