Whenever a major presidential candidate is defeated, certain moments are inevitable: the pride-swallowing speech, the thanking of supporters … and a Saturday Night Live cast member missing the chance for four more years of playing a popular recurring character on the show.
With Republican candidate Rick Santorum dropping out of the 2012 race, his SNL doppelganger Andy Samberg won’t have a shot at doing those cold open sketches from the Oval Office next season. Thankfully, Seth Meyers is around to console him.
“About to sit down Samberg and tell him he’s not going to play the President,” Meyers tweeted. “This part of the job is never easy … Still can’t believe it’s all over for the guy who never had a chance.”
