The Avengers

For months, fans have been trying to guess who the alien attackers will be in The Avengers, with little to go on but blurry images in trailers and photos of crashed ships and weapons on the film’s set.

Writer-director Joss Whedon assures fans that it is not the Skrull or the Kree, two extra-terrestrial races with rich histories in the Marvel Comics universe, but beyond that this bad-guy army remains a mystery. All we know is that Loki (Tom Hiddleston), the troublemaking, exiled brother of Thor, is apparently leading them.

A new TV spot (seen after the jump) gives us our first close-up of the attackers — and they ain’t pretty.

But this footage also doesn’t give much of an indication who they are, either.

It’s pretty clear they’re not the goblin-esque, Spock-eared Skrulls, though it’s possible they are a more savage take on the Kree, despite Whedon’s claims that it’s not.

But the real question is: Does it matter? Do you want to know who these aliens are, despite Marvel’s attempts to keep it hush-hush, or would you rather be surprised when the movie comes out May 4?
