Any book that opens with the murder of Vincent van Gogh, as Christopher Moore’s funny and inventive novel does, is clearly comfortable stretching the limits of historical fiction. Set in the impressionist art world of the belle epoque, with such familiar names as Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Monet as supporting characters, the book follows a young baker/aspiring painter as he tries to uncover the mystery of van Gogh’s death and the true identity of the man who peddles a sought-after ”sacred blue” paint. While it may occasionally teeter into the overly zany, Sacré Bleu is a consistently compelling blend of love story, mystery, and ”what if?” art-history lesson. B+
