'Desperate Housewives': Teri Hatcher on shocking death
James Denton didn’t seem to have a problem with his character, Mike Delfino, being killed off in last night’s episode of Desperate Housewives. “It’s actually brilliant,” Denton told EW, of the way Mike was shot in retaliation by a loan shark. “As an actor, you just hope people care.”
But Teri Hatcher — who plays his on-screen wife Susan — isn’t so easy-breezy about the death. “I’ve got to be honest,” she told EW, “I think it was a bad idea.”
So bad, in fact, that Hatcher approached the show’s producers about making Mike’s shooting a veil for something more. “When I heard about the plan of his death, I pitched a story idea that in the finale he would be in an airport in Bolivia and MJ and I would run into his arms and discover the whole thing had been some undercover witness-protection program,” Hatcher says.
Unfortunately, the idea didn’t stick, and Hatcher’s Susan will likely end the series much the same was she began it: single. “It’s sad to me that Susan, who started the series as a single, unloved mother, ends now in the same way,” Hatcher says. “I always thought the audience wanted to see Mike and Susan finally happy and safe but that place did not sustain itself for [Desperate Housewives creator] Marc [Cherry] or ABC, I guess.”
