Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer as Tonto and the Lone Ranger -- FIRST LOOK
Who is this masked man? (Come on, you don’t really have to ask that.)
With shooting underway in New Mexico on a big-budget remake of The Lone Ranger, producer Jerry Bruckheimer leaked the first photo of stars Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in full make-up and costume with a Tweet that said simply: “Tonto and The Lone Ranger Ride Again!”
That they do. Click through for the full version …
Depp has told EW this version of the classic Western (directed by Gore Verbinski, who made Rango and the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies) will attempt to make the one-time sidekick Tonto a fuller role, and more substantial friendship with the white-skinned vigilante who roams the desert shooting silver bullets and wearing a mask.
It’s hard to read too much into one photo, but Hammer’s Ranger certainly looks steadfast as he gazes out into the middle distance, while Depp’s painted face can’t mask a degree of concern — either about the mission or the man he’s sharing it with.
What are your thoughts on the new look of these two characters? It’s a long way from Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels.
