If all you know about John Carter has come from the various teasers and trailers for Disney’s $250 million sci-fi adventure, it may likely come as a bit of a surprise to learn that the film’s titular hero (Taylor Kitsch) is a washed-up Confederate Civil War hero who begins his story on Earth. Six days before the film hits theaters, however, Disney has released a 10-minute scene that takes place entirely on Earth — in Arizona, to be precise. The scene comes from very early on in the story, as Carter’s nephew Edgar Rice Burroughs* (Daryl Sabara) begins reading his (apparently deceased) uncle’s journal and learns how his exploits began.

Breaking Bad fans will also find a happy surprise in the new footage: Bryan Cranston as a tenacious U.S. cavalryman. Check it out below:

*Yep, that’s the same Edgar Rice Burroughs whose 100-year-old John Carter novels are the basis for director Andrew Stanton’s feature film. The conceit in those books is the same: That Burroughs stumbled upon these tales as if they’d really happened to his mysterious uncle.

So what do you make of this extended sneak peak at John Carter?
