Though neither Michelle Williams nor Shailene Woodley nabbed an Oscar this year, they did both pick up statues at the Independent Spirit Awards

The Independent Spirit Awards took place on Feb. 25, one day before the Oscars, and the two events had a surprising amount in common: The Artist won Best Feature, Best Director, and Best Male Lead, while Christopher Plummer scored Best Supporting Male for Beginners. But in a field free of The Iron Lady and The Help, Michelle Williams (My Week With Marilyn) was anointed Best Female Lead and Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) triumphed for Best Supporting Female, proving that the line between independent cinema and the Hollywood mothership hasn’t completely disappeared. ”We all want to be as cool as [the show’s announcer] John Waters,” said The Descendants co-writer Jim Rash, who received both a Spirit Award and an Oscar for his work. ”Maybe that’s why mainstream folks are getting into the indie-filmmaking world more and more.” Not all of the weekend’s accolades were laudatory, however: Adam Sandler managed to pick up a record 11 nominations for the 2012 Razzie Awards (to be held April 1), which celebrate the worst of Hollywood. Although anyone who saw Jack and Jill might be thinking, ”Only 11?”
