After Wednesday and Thursday’s episodes of the Colbert Report were canceled due to “unforeseen circumstances,” the New York Post is now reporting that Colbert’s 91-year-old mother is ailing and that the host suspended production to be with her in South Carolina. Comedy Central has not elaborated upon the cause for the sudden suspension, nor addressed a Wall Street Journal report that there had been an “emergency in Mr. Colbert’s family.”

“They are a very private family,” a source told the Post. “It’s not surprising that he did not want anyone to know what was going on.”

At this point, next week’s schedule is moving forward as planned, though a spokesperson for Comedy Central cautioned that it “is subject to change, as was the case this week.”
