Last night’s Smash pilot ended on a glorious cliff-hanger. As bright-eyed Broadway hopeful Karen Cartwright (Katharine McPhee) and dues-paying chorine Ivy Lynn (Megan Hilty) sang their hearts out to score the role of a lifetime, battle lines were drawn. No matter if you’re Team Karen or Team Ivy, you can’t help but wait breathless to find out the series’ great mystery: Who will play Marilyn?

As Smash producers have assured EW, the question will be answered next week. Sort of. A Marilyn will be chosen for the musical’s workshop (a.k.a. fancy rehearsal run), but that doesn’t mean the part is hers until it gets to the Great White Way. At least one legitimate film star will be popping by to shake things up for Karen and Ivy: Uma Thurman will have a multi-episode arc playing a big-time Hollywood star with her sights set on the part.

Until then, let’s look back at a couple of McPhee and Hilty’s greatest hits from stage and screen, then you can cast your vote for which ingénue you want in that famous white dress.

Hilty sings “Backwoods Barbie” during 9 to 5‘s 2008 pre-Broadway run

NEXT: Now for something a little more up-tempo…

Hilty performs “Popular” from Wicked in 2007
