After taking heat from conservative group One Million Moms this week for hiring an out lesbian as its spokesperson, J.C. Penney announced Friday that the company stands behind its partnership with comedian Ellen DeGeneres.

One Million Moms, a division of the American Family Association, had launched a campaign against J.C. Penney for not being “neutral in the culture war,” arguing that DeGeneres’ association with the company would hurt business because “most of its customers are traditional families.” In response, gay and lesbian rights group GLAAD launched a counter-campaign, Stand Up For Ellen, attracting more than 25,000 signatures in their petition to J.C. Penney to keep DeGeneres as their spokesperson.
