True Blood star Ryan Kwanten is flying the unfriendly skies.

Here is our first look at the actor in the upcoming supernatural thriller 7500, about passengers on a flight from L.A. to Tokyo who encounter something far more sinister than turbulence on the trans-Pacific journey.

“It’s a haunted house movie on an airplane,” says Kwanten.

“I play a character who is having a very rough time in his marriage. It’s on the rocks and they’re in the last weeks really. They’re taking the trip only because their best friends prepaid for these tickets. They’re doing it as a favor.”

When bizarre occurrences begin overtaking the flight, “the passengers must choose to [either] band together or become loose cannons and start looking out for themselves. It’s a survival-of-the-fittest type thing,” Kwanten says.

Co-stars include Jerry Ferrara (Entourage, third from right), Nicky Whelan (Scrubs, second from the right), and Scout Taylor-Compton (the Halloween remakes, right) while Amy Smart (Shameless, left) plays Kwanten’s wife.

What exactly happens on board the flight? The actor says he doesn’t want to say too much, at risk of spoiling it, but hints that painful moments from their pasts begin to manifest themselves on the plane. “We deal with our problems and conflicts of the past and try to find a way to overcome that,” Kwanten says.

7500, directed by The Grudge filmmaker Takashi Shimizu, comes out Aug. 31.
