Kate Perry releases another 'The One That Got Away' remix
- Music
Katy Perry will not rest until “The One That Got Away” becomes her sixth straight No. 1 single.
The pop star’s album Teenage Dream has already matched Michael Jackson’s Bad as the second album in history to produce five No. 1’s, and a few weeks ago, Perry came thisclose to topping the King of Pop with “The One That Got Away.”
A remixed-version of the song featuring B.O.B. boosted the pop lament from No. 5 to No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in December, but Perry couldn’t muscle her way past LMFAO’s “Sexy and I Know It” or Rihanna’s “We Found Love,” and last week, she dropped down to No. 6.
Now, Perry has released another remix — this time a stripped-down acoustic take — perhaps in hopes that it can boost sales and get the sometimes-pink-sometimes-blue-haired diva that sixth No. 1 (that got away). Give it a listen below:
As my colleague Erin Strecker remarked a few months ago, “The One That Got Away” really makes sense as a ballad. Beneath all the “Whoahoohaahoohaa”s and thumping bass is a plaintive ode to a lost love, and that remorseful sentiment shines on this pretty acoustic version.
And while I’m certainly not gleeful that Perry and Russell Brand are getting a divorce, those circumstances do give the song a new layer of personal meaning, which may help listeners connect to the music.
What do you think — can this remix can finally propel “The One That Got Away” to the top spot? Or should she let this one go?
