Fan anticipation seems to be inflamed with every tantalizing new glimpse we get of the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ bestseller, The Hunger Games, with one exception — the photos we’ve seen of Haymitch so far.

Sure, Woody Harrleson is a great choice to bring the perpetually soused mentor of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) to life, but what is the deal with that Prince-Valiant-by-way-of-the-“Rachel” hairdo he’s sporting in his profile teaser poster? It seems like an odd affectation for a character who, in the book, is aggressively unconcerned with his personal appearance.

Lionsgate has released a new still from the film, and, for me at least, it has assuaged some of my concerns about Haymitch’s coiffure. Check it out below:

Now that we can finally see Haymitch head on, am I the only one who’s getting a real Kurt Cobain vibe here? Those stringy, oily locks look like they haven’t been washed in weeks. It’s still a bold choice, but it’s one that makes much more sense now that we can get a good look at what Harrelson and director Gary Ross are going for.

We also get another good look at Lenny Kravitz’s Cinna, and Hutcherson’s Peeta, as they confer with Haymitch on, well, those of you who’ve read the book know exactly what they’re conferring about. Suffice it to say, if Katniss was privy to this conversation, she would not be happy.

What do you make of Haymitch’s look? And who else is envious of Cinna’s understated black blazer?
