Rachel Crow and other horrifying but hypnotic reality eliminations
If there was ever a subject matter tailor-made for our Horrifying But Hypnotic category on PopWatch it was the tear-filled elimination of 13-year-old Rachel Crow on last night’s X Factor. I know it’s wrong, but part of me enjoyed seeing her emotional breakdown (she hit the floor, wailed, and said “You promised me” to her mother). Not because I like to see young girls suffer. But because I think we need to be reminded that while giving someone that age a chance at fulfilling their dreams is sweet, it can also be soul-crushing and you have to be able to deal with the consequences. I mean, at that age, you bawl if your mother won’t let you go to a friend’s house. Let’s take a look back at some other horrifying but hypnotic eliminations:
The X Factor: Okay, you need to watch this one more time.
America’s Next Top Model: Tyra Banks screamed at contestant Tiffany for not taking the opportunity she’d just lost seriously and got loud when Tiffany tried to defend herself and didn’t want a life lecture during a reality TV elimination ceremony. “Be quiet, Tiffany. Be quiet. What is wrong with you? Stop it! I have never in my life yelled at a girl like this. When my mother yells like this, it’s because she loves me. I was rooting for you. We were all rooting for you. How dare you?”
She’s Got the Look: Contestant Laurie offered to sacrifice herself for the other women… by behaving so awkwardly, they and the judges had no choice but to send her home. “I took my top off because beauty is spiritual, and if they weren’t gonna let me protect them, I wanted out.”
Hell’s Kitchen: Ill Aaron gets the call, in a hospital bed, that he won’t be allowed back in the competition.
American Idol: When Pia Toscano went home instead of Stefano Langone, the judges scolded America and hung their heads. Pia’s mic captured her weeping after she finished her final song.
