Ethan Hawke announces another 'Before' movie
Nine years is an awfully long time to wait to see your one true love again. Of course, if you’re a fan of the beautiful, heartbreakingly true-to-life films Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, you know that feeling all too well. Alas, the long wait could be over… again: Ethan Hawke recently revealed to French website AlloCine.com (ah, Celine would be so proud) that he and Before collaborators Julie Delpy and Richard Linklater are ready to bring the decades-spanning love story back to the screen.
Hawke told the outlet, “Well, I don’t know what we’re going to do, but I know the three of us have been talking a lot in the last six months. … All of three of us have been having similar feelings that we’re ready to revisit those characters. There’s nine years between the first two movies and, if we made the film next summer, it would be nine years again, so we’re really started thinking that would be a good thing to do. We’re going to try write it this year.” (EW reached out to Hawke’s reps who informed us that there was no additional information about the project at this time.)
In addition to guessing what the next chapter of the saga could even be titled — Before Dusk? Before Dawn? Before Dinner? Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead? (Wait, no, that one’s already taken… ) — there’s the even more pressing matter of having to revisit that inner turmoil of whether the passing years have turned us into cynics or kept us as romantics. (Or, perhaps it’s the other way around.) When we left Jesse and Celine at her quaint French apartment back in 2004, my heart hoped he stayed and listened to her sing her lovely waltz until they grew old together, but my head told me he had a young son he desperately loved back in New York City and he simply caught a later flight.
While I could never begin, or even want to guess the wonderful new places Hawke, Delpy, and Linklater will take Jesse and Celine — both location-wise and emotionally — I do have certain hopes for them in the third film, especially seeing how they grew from love-struck, arguably foolish kids into adults in Sunset. (By the way, let’s be thankful Before Sunrise happened when it did, because that near-perfect film would cease to exist in the Facebook age.)
I do hope they meet up again in some stunning European locales (though a New York City reunion would be fitting, as the story in Sunset about him seeing her on his wedding day slays me every time) and that, in the depths of my admittedly cynical heart, these two have wound up together at some point over the past nine years. I wouldn’t expect their relationship to be picturesque (whose is?), but even as jaded adults, Celine and Jesse knew you only connect with someone like that once in a lifetime and it’s never too late for a second chance. Or in this case, for us, a third.
What about you, fellow Before fans? Are you as breathlessly excited about this news as I am? Or did they leave Before Sunset on a perfect enough note? Where do you hope a third movie will pick up? In your mind, are Jesse and Celine together or apart? Should they catch up these two every nine years? Share in the comments section below.
