Ricky Gervais took to his blog to discuss his decision to return as Golden Globes host in 2012. “It was a tough decision to be honest,” he wrote. Of course, he wasn’t concerned about Angelina Jolie’s icy stare, he was more concerned he “couldn’t improve on last year.” He said his list of pros and cons included the consideration that “some people would be uncomfortable with me being host. (This was a pro by the way.)”

But enough with the gravitas! Gervais proved he hasn’t lost his impish spirit with one awesomely defiant statement: “What actually tipped the balance and made me say yes, was the fact that it would shut up all those f—ing idiots who said that I’d never be invited back.” He then wondered, “Is that the wrong reason to do something?” No, Ricky. It most certainly is not. Oh, but there’s more…

Despite a half-hearted apology last January, Gervais reneged in this statement. “The outrage I caused was of course, as usual, totally out of proportion to the things I said,” he defended, adding, “I don’t think anyone had any right to be offended.” With guns blazing, he vowed, “This year I’m going to make sure their offence is completely justified.”

Are you excited for another year of Gervais at the Globes? Since he said this would “definitely” be his last year hosting the telecast, are you giddy with the thought of the bridges he’ll burn? Who do you hope he’ll set his sights on this year?

Gervais is currently developing Life’s Too Short, his follow-up to Extras on HBO. If you haven’t seen this knee-slappingly hilarious clip of Liam Neeson’s cameo, what are you waiting for?
