'X Factor' renewed: What should change, stay the same?
Fox has already renewed The X Factor for a second season, even though our laser light migraines are still pounding from last week’s first live performance show! Fox’s president of alternative entertainment called the pickup “a complete no-brainer.” Well, here is our possibly incomplete no-brainer list of what the show should keep and what it should ditch for next year. After you check out our suggestions, please add your own in the comments:
–The ridiculous and totally ’90s “hurtling through space” opening credits, because I already have choreographed a sofa-dance to accompany them
–The Host (but buy Stevecrest some bigger clothes please)
–The streamlined “boot camp” episodes that featured zero “who’s going to be in my group?!” drama
–15 percent of the backup dancers (can be hilarious, but only if used sparingly)
–The talented singers!
–The overwhelming “We are the one percent!” vibe of the Judges’ Mansions round
–Scripted bickering among the judges that no one’s buying
–Scripted “massive mistakes” (like Simon not originally choosing Melanie Amaro, pictured) that no one’s buying
–At least 50 percent of the crazy flashy lights to lower risk of seizure
–JumboTrons with judges/contestants’ faces (they suggest the show is a live circus, which will always be disappointing because where are the elephants?)
A lot of you probably disagree with me about host Steve Jones. I think he’s got potential! He’s been funny in past interviews and I’m kind of digging his awkwardness and the fact that he is always stressed out for time. It adds an urgency to the telecast that I appreciate, especially if the show is two hours long. Let’s give him a chance. But seriously, cut those lights.
Anyway, let us know how you’d change the show for season 2. And gear up for tonight’s two-hour liiiiiiiiive laser show — the first time the Top 12 “acts” will perform for viewer votes — with my ‘X Factor’: Top 12 Power List (PHOTO GALLERY).
