On the 'Celebrity Apprentice' scene: Here's to the ladies who (sell) lunch
The fifth season of The Celebrity Apprentice is underway, and the ladies of Team As-Yet-To-Be-Named-But-Hopefully-It’s-Something-Like-Fabulicious! took to New York’s West 52nd Street to sell their wares during a lunchtime charity challenge. Previously announced contestant Cheryl Tiegs braved the paps with Miss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela (pictured left) and Miss New York USA 2011 Amber Collins to hand out fliers. Sandwich seekers walked a red carpet in and even got their photo taken by an on-scene photographer. But what awaited me inside? Read on to find out and see the ladies’ menu.
Things were mostly quiet at 11:30 a.m. on a Tuesday, with mostly crew and contestants populating the midtown Café Metro. I did spot Nyasha Zimucha from LOGO’s The A-List: New York milling around. (Zimucha is a former Miss Africa USA, which makes three — count ’em three — ladies from the Trump Organization’s pageant on the scene.) The otherwise soporific atmosphere was occasionally jarred by a contestant yelling, “Teresa!” Yes, indeed, it looks like drama follows Real Housewives of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice everywhere she goes.
Comedian Lisa Lampanelli and teen pop icon Debbie Gibson handed out sandwiches behind the counter. When asked which sandwich she preferred, Lampanelli said, “It’s gotta be the fat one — the Italian.” Alas, “Teresa Giudice’s Hot-Blooded Housewife Hoagie” (Italian meats on Focaccia billed as good enough to “make you flip your lid — and maybe even a table!”) was a little too rich for my arteries… and my pocket at $100. I settled on “Debbie Gibson’s Teen Dream” (a basic grilled cheese in a box autographed by Gibson herself) for $20. Despite my confession that I dressed up as Gibson for Halloween in eighth grade, she couldn’t grant me a photo under producers’ orders. That’s okay, Deb. I’ll still get lost in your eyes any time.
Tia Carrere was still learning the ropes on the cash register when I checked out. When I asked the former Dancing With the Stars contestant what she thought about this season’s crop of Stars, she admitted she hasn’t been watching. “I think I’ve got my hands full with this!” As I headed out, Gibson kicked off an impromptu concert of “Only in My Dreams.”
As for the upcoming season of Celebrity Apprentice, Carrere kept mum on how long the teams had been filming, but you can bet there’s already drama brewing. Downside of my Apprentice experience: My $20 sandwich was room temperature. Upside: I didn’t get called a “prostitution whore!”
What do you think, PopWatchers? Are you excited for this next season of Celebrity Apprentice? What do you think about this ladies’ poster and their menu (below)? Which of the announced contestants are you rooting for? Who did you think will get fired first?
