The new Pop-Up Video isn’t just for music nostalgia anymore. A recent episode of the resurrected VH1 staple featured Green Day’s “21 Guns,” and the bubbled-up footnote that Billie Joe Armstrong once named Rob Pattinson as his top choice to play the lead in the cinematic adaption of the American Idiot musical proved enough to fire up the Internet today. To be accurate, it seems as if Armstrong told back in 2009 that Pattinson and Ellen Page were the perfect couple to play Christian and Gloria, the lead characters from their followup album, 21st Century Breakdown. “He’s a good actor. There’s still more to come with that kid,”he said.

But no matter. Two years later, Pattinson remains a pretty solid choice for either role. Not only is he a good physical match for Billie Joe/Johnny/Christian, but the Twilight star can actually do his own singing. Heck, he’s even karoaked with Hugh Jackman! With the Twilight saga soon coming to an end, his slate might even be clear for American Idiot, which is being developed by Tom Hanks’ Playtone for Universal.

Pattinson might have Armstrong’s blessing — or not — but I’m curious how Green Day fans would receive Pattinson in the role. Sure, both camps worship pale-faced heroes, but I assumed Green Day and Twilight fans traveled in different circles hemispheres. Watch the video that launched 1,000 tweets and then vote on whether Pattinson has the goods to play the role.
