Originally, Martin Scorsese was going to direct Schindler’s List while Steven Spielberg remade 1962’s Cape Fear, a thriller about an ex-con terrorizing the lawyer who helped send him away. In the end, they wound up swapping films. Which is probably for the best, because I can’t imagine Spielberg shooting a seduction scene as perversely creepy as the one between Robert De Niro and Juliette Lewis. Just out on Blu-ray, Cape Fear (1991, R, 2 hrs., 8 mins.) is a must for that 10-minute exchange alone, as Lewis’ pouty teen falls under De Niro’s sick spell when he poses as her teacher. Both got Oscar nods for their efforts. The rest of us got nightmares.
