After one of the most auspicious film debuts in recent memory, actress Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life, The Help, The Debt) has signed onto star opposite Tom Cruise in director Joseph Kosinski’s untitled sci-fi follow-up to his 2010 hit TRON: Legacy, EW has confirmed. (The Hollywood Reporter first reported the story.)

Set in an apocalyptic future where the majority of humanity lives in the clouds, Cruise will play a man who works on the Earth’s surface, repairing the machines that ward off an alien threat; Chastain will play his love interest who still lives above. When Cruise meets another woman who appears to have crash landed on the barren planet, he’s driven to reexamine everything he knows.

The film — which has at various points been titled Oblivion and Horizons — was conceived by Kosinski as a graphic novel with writer Arvid Nelson and illustrator Andree Wallin. The project was initially set up at Disney, and then moved to Universal last spring.
