UPDATE: Eddie Murphy has been officially named host of the 2012 Academy Awards ceremony.

ORIGINAL POST: Eddie Murphy is the reported frontrunner to host next year’s Oscar ceremony. According to multiple reports, the show’s producer Brett Ratner, who directed the comedian in this fall’s upcoming comedy, Tower Heist, is championing the legendary but mildly reclusive funnyman for the high-profile gig. (Humor Mill Magazine first broke the story.) Murphy, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 2007 for his role in Dreamgirls, would reinforce Ratner’s public comments that he intends to revitalize the Oscar telecast with great comedy.
