Earthquake shakes 'DC Cupcakes' filming, Discovery Channel operations
There were varied degrees of interruption across the TV business today following the east coast earthquake that jostled states from North Carolina to New York just before 2 p.m. ET.
“The earthquake today was crazy!” DC Cupcake stars Katherine Kallinis and Sophie LaMontagne told EW in a statement. “We were filming at the lab and all of a sudden the floor started shaking and things were rattling on the shelves. Everyone including the film crew evacuated just to be safe (Mommy wanted to hide under the mixing table!) and there were sirens going off in Georgetown.” The sisters added, “Thankfully everyone is okay and everything seems to be back to normal!”
Meanwhile, the Discovery Channel headquarters, located in Silver Spring, Md., over 100 miles from the earthquake’s epicenter in Virginia, were evacuated following the 5.9-magnitude quake. Employees were sent home for the remainder of the day, a Discovery spokesperson confirmed to EW.
No major damage or injuries are being reported as a result of the rare quake. But there is tweeting. Oh, lots and lots of tweeting.
