Drew Barrymore talks directing Supervideo for band Best Coast and chooses her five favorite music videos -- EXCLUSIVE
- Movie
Drew Barrymore latest project has taken her behind the camera once again. The actress (on screen next in February 2012’s Everybody Loves Whales) and director (2009’s Whip It) has gone behind the camera once again to helm a clip for garage-pop trio Best Coast’s single “Our Deal,” featuring young Hollywood breakouts Chloë Moretz (Let Me In) and Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf) in a dreamy homage to The Warriors and West Side Story. The 10-minute MTV Supervideo, a concept developed by the network and executive producer Kashy Khaledi, also features appearances by Alia Shawkat, Miranda Cosgrove, Donald Glover and Shailene Woodley. “I’m so inspired by music,” says Barrymore. “So many performances and emotions and feelings enable an actor on set if you play live music.” We asked the star to pick a few of her all-time favorite clips.
Bjork, “Triumph of the Heart” (2005)
“It has this great authentic and raw vibe, but then they do put the man as a cat. I really love a duality. I can’t have too much romance and I can’t have too much street. I want love in the street!”
The Strokes, “Hard to Explain” (2001)
“Here is a video where I felt like they did sort of a photo book, a montage of clips, in the coolest way. I love great graphics, and if I could, I would have my own graphics and ad agency.”
Justice, “D.A.N.C.E.” (2007)
“Somehow they’ve made a cartoon whimsical and cool but made it feel like a modern effect. And it was original! I was like, ‘Oh, that’s so friggin’ cool!’ Anyone who has a fresh idea, they have my complete and utter admiration.”
Bat for Lashes, “What’s a Girl to Do” (2007)
“When girls get to be girls but have the cool factor, I love it. I thought that video has girl with boy cool factor. It has a really elegant one-shot nature. I thought it had a hauntingness and a whimsy.”
The Prodigy, “Smack My Bitch Up” (1997)
“I love a surprise ending. Make me go on a journey and then turn my head around—I’m in. It’s got fun. It’s got debauchery. Sometimes we’re a little naughty in life, and this one to me has naughtiness with a delicious whip and a smile.” (NOTE: This video is a lil’ too “naughty” to post but here’s a link to check it out!)
