As many a horror movie buff would argue, it’s often what you don’t see that is the scariest thing of all. That’s exactly what the trailer for The Darkest Hour seems to be going for as it finds four friends, played by Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Max Minghella, and Rachael Taylor, partying in Russia when disaster — in the form of invisible aliens — strikes.

Except, they aren’t really invisible so much as glowing orbs and squiggle lines that have the ability to suck up the Earth’s energy and incinerate people, bullets, and even a dog (for shame!) in a split second. While a lot of the trailer follows a familiar formula (young Americans trip abroad goes awry, post-apocalyptic landscapes), the visual and special effects (including some electromagnetic alien night-vision capabilities) from this Timur Bekmambetov-produced sci-fi thriller should be able to lure folks into a dark theater, no problem. Watch the full trailer below.

The Darkest Hour, which is directed by Chris Gorak (Right at Your Door), is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 23.
