Gratitude for choosing this blog post to find out about the Spartacus panel at Comic-Con, moderated by EW’s Adam B. Vary. We heard from the show’s cast, producers and even got to see a trailer (below).
— Okay, they start the panel by showing the Vengeance trailer. Honestly? It gives The Walking Dead trailer posted earlier today a run for its money. The show looks bigger and more… (I’m trying to avoid the word “epic” since EW readers have started hating the media’s overuse of that word but…) …more epic than ever before. (Riding horses? In a show shot entirely indoors on green screen? Impressive!)
— “It’s a great privily, a great honor, it’s a great responsibility,” says Liam McIntyre, about taking over the title role of Spartacus after Andy Whitfield dropped out to resume treatment for cancer. “I was a fan. I would have been sitting down there [in the audience]. All of a sudden, I find myself sitting up here. Everyone can agree Andy was amazing. The best thing I can do is bust my ass and honor that legacy trying to make season 2 as amazingly as exciting as season 1. And that’s all I can do.”
— Showrunner Steven S. DeKnight on Andy’s health: “He’s doing very well. He’s very private about his health. We have joked with each other about working together again — and then he says [he wants to do] something where he doesn’t take his clothes off.”
— DeKnight on season 2: “My plan this season is to kill more people. I won’t give it away, but there’s one episode where we kill a lot of people. It’s a gigantic season. In season 2, Spartacus learns how to be a leader. He goes from a guy with an axe to grind to being a leader. But the season is called Vengeance, and he’s not the only one who’s out for it.”
— Which cues up, of course, Lucy Lawless, who says her character wants to “claw my way back to some sort of platform of power.” Also, the conniving Asher, though not much seen in the trailer, “is totally there and he’s wild,” says Lawless. “Like laugh-out-loud brilliant. He’s totally dangerous and totally useful. He’s back in a big way.”
— A fan asks if all the actors know what each other look like naked. The panel snickers, nobody wants to answer, until Liam volunteers: “Yes, we’re very familiar with seeing each other naked.”
— DeKnight, on whether Spartacus will end like the Stanley Kubrick movie (spoiler alert): “People remember the Kubrick movie … that’s actually not what happened [to Spartacus]. But we’ll stick pretty close to it.” He’s also asked if he’d consider doing another prequel: “Hell yeah, I want a yacht.”
— Manu Bennett says he once was in a fight scene where the prop master forgot to swap out his enemy’s metal sword for a blunted one and he now has a scar across his chest to show for it.
Okay, here’s the trailer. This is not the great long one we just saw at Comic-Con, just 30 seconds. But it’s still a first look at the new season:
