You bastards!

All right, before you freak out, it’s not a spoiler. It’s right there at the start of the trailer, so let’s not act like this revelation ruins the movie, though it is pretty shocking to see Gwyneth Paltrow so quickly eradicated. She has a way of making her widowed leading men really lose it: Will “What happened to her!?!” become the 2011 version of “What’s in the box!?!”

Still, in a movie called Contagion, about a world-wide pandemic that wipes out the population, you can expect at least some of the all-star cast to succumb to the bug. They can’t all be faceless extras who shuffle off this mortal coil. Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, John Hawkes and Jude Law — better start working on that bucket list.

Soderbergh’s film, out Sept. 9, seems at least to be more dark and intense than 1995’s Outbreak, kind of the mother of all virus-gone-wild movies, back when The Hot Zone was introducing everyone to — and making everyone terrified of — a crazy little thing called ebola. In the case of Outbreak, the deadly disease was conveniently contained in one small town, and Dustin Hoffman was our anti-virus.

Once again, it’s the end of the world as we know it, and we feel… cough, cough.
