If you’ve got a sweet tooth for hard-boiled tough guys and fatal dames, you’ll want to check out Robert Aldrich’s strangely seductive L.A. noir Kiss Me Deadly (1955, Not Rated, 1 hr., 46 mins.). Packed with extras, this new Criterion release sends novelist Mickey Spillane’s knuckle-dragging private eye Mike Hammer (played by gruff lump Ralph Meeker) through a cesspool of tawdry twists, all of them hinging on a mysterious box containing a deadly light that fans of Pulp Fiction should find eerily familiar.
