Before Cars 2 can even speed into theaters later this month, Disney has unveiled an airborne spin-off “From Above the World of Cars” titled… Flying Cars! Nah, sorry. They went with Planes instead. Take a peek at the teaser for the straight-to-DVD ‘toon, set for Spring 2013.

Though the characters share the same artistic sensibility as their counterparts in Cars, Pixar was not officially involved. “The team at DisneyToon Studios has done such an amazing job creating a heartfelt story filled with great comedy, adventure, and emotion,” Disney creative exec John Lasseter said in a release back when the project was confirmed in February. “I know audiences are going to love taking off into the wild blue yonder with these daredevil characters, as they experience a whole new kind of animated adventure.”

As someone who’s done a little homework on the lucrative business of Cars toys, I can say Planes was inevitable. And to be fair, DisneyToon Studios seems to have replicated the beauty and charm of the Cars films. What remains to be seen, of course, is whether Planes can approach the Pixar magic when it comes to storyline. Even when they’re co-opting plots from Michael J. Fox comedies, Pixar is the gold standard. One thing’s for certain: We never expected to see a Disney or Pixar animated film with a trailer underscored by White Zombie’s “More Human Than Human.”
