'The Big C': Cathy's Back
Where we left off Cancer patient Cathy Jamison went from being in denial about her condition (malignant melanoma) to admitting the truth to herself — and, more importantly, to her husband, Paul (Oliver Platt), and son, Adam (Gabriel Basso). She explored lots of therapies, from interleukin to bee stings, unsuccessfully.
What happens next Cathy will come clean about her disease to all her friends and loved ones, including ne’er-do-well brother Sean (John Benjamin Hickey), who will struggle to accept the news. And she’ll seek salvation in a new doctor (guest star Alan Alda). She’ll also get to enjoy the only benefit of the disease — medicinal marijuana — which is a helpful perk, since dealing with life-and-death issues daily is stressful work. ”I think she’s becoming a better person,” says Linney, who won a Golden Globe for the role. ”It’s fun to play a character who does change so much. Last season was a lot of denial, and this season she’s starting to fight.”
