Never mind the grumbling haters and the 35 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. With The Hangover Part II continuing to slash and burn its way through the box office ($384 million worldwide and counting), a third trip down amnesia lane for the Wolfpack is clearly inevitable. In the new issue of Rolling Stone, cover boy Zach Galifianakis confirms, “They want to do a Hangover III… I’m getting fricking phone calls already.” And he doesn’t stop there. In the interview, Galifianakis seems to spill the beans on the third film’s storyline as well, suggesting that the plot for The Hangover Part III could center on his demented manchild Alan escaping from a mental institution with a little help from his friends.

The Hangover Part II caught a lot of flak from many critics and moviegoers alike for replicating the basic plot structure of the first film too faithfully, and director Todd Phillips has said in interviews that the third Hangover will definitely break away from that tried-and-true formula. But this is the first time any potential plot details have been offered. It’s entirely possible, of course, that Galifianakis is just joking about the mental-hospital storyline,or that the idea is just one of several being tossed around at this point. (Warner Bros. hasn’t responded yet to our question on the matter.) Assuming it’s for real, though, what do you think of the idea? Would you prefer to have the franchise stay in the warm, familiar bosom of wedding-eve parties gone awry, naked Chinese criminals, drug-induced blackouts, and Mike Tyson cameos? Or does the mental-institution-breakout idea — which sounds almost like some bizarro R-rated-comedy version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest — get you excited for The Hangover III?
