Very rarely does something come along that’s this unexpectedly spooky.

The Quirk Books trailer for Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (on sale June 7) could just as easily serve as the teaser trailer for a film, and indeed the novel has already sold its film rights to 20th Century Fox.

Author Ransom Riggs was inspired to craft this tale by various old, found photographs of children in uncanny situations — hovering slightly in the air, or standing alone by a pond with a dual reflection in the water. Read some excerpts here.

It almost sounds like a superhero collective (think turn-of-the-last-century X-Men) fused with Harry Potter’ Hogwarts, only far creepier and mysterious than either. Riggs is also a filmmaker, and he devised the trailer himself, flying to Belgium to shoot in various abandoned homes, according to the publisher. (I guess Belgium has the world’s best haunted-looking houses?)

You can’t argue with the result. Prepare to have the hair on your arms stand up.
