Much like the books they’re based on, the casting for The Hunger Games has already jolted its fans with some unexpected twists. While there had been some speculation that rocker Lenny Kravitz would step in the role of Katniss’ flashy, but friendly, stylist Cinna, most HG fans had hedged their bets on actor Cillian Murphy. But — and forgive me for this one, PopWatchers — Gary Ross and Co., opted to go Kravitz’s way instead.
I’m sure my initial reaction sounded not unlike a good portion of you (“Really?!?“), but then I remembered Kravtiz’s performance as a male nurse in 2009’s harrowing Precious. He was good. Actually, really, very good, for the short amount of time he was on screen. Granted, this is an entirely different kind of adaptation, and we haven’t seen much of his range, but I’ve become more optimistic and excited about the idea of musician (whose other acting credits include lending his voice to The Rugrats Movie and an episode of The Simpsons) taking on the pivotal role of Cinna. Because, if nothing else, the guy certainly knows a thing or two about creating and flaunting a unique style (see above).
Plus, he could just as easily join the lineage of ’90s musicians who have pleasantly surprised us on the big screen. (Think: Two little guys named Mark Wahlberg and Will Smith.) In fact, it seems the Kravitz clan (could they be the new Smiths?) are poised to take over the movies, as Lenny’s daughter Zoe Kravitz will star alongside his Hunger Games co-star Jennifer Lawrence in the upcoming X-Men: First Class. So it’s your move Lenny. We’re ready to be won over.
Has the idea of Lenny Kravitz starring as Cinna in Hunger Games grown on you yet, PopWatchers? Or are you still somewhat baffled by the choice?
