Ask the stars of The Hangover Part II how the sequel differs from the original smash comedy, and everyone seems to agree: This go-around is much, much darker. How dark? “We do things in this movie that no mom should see her child subjected to,” said Zach Galifianakis, expressing amazement that co-star Ed Helms had brought his mother to yesterday’s Hollywood premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. “It is so bad in parts that I told my mom she is not allowed to see it. I forbid, forbade, forbid her from coming. In fact, I am going to hide my head in shame around Ed’s parents too.”

Galifianakis, though, told EW that fans of the first film will find plenty to love in Part II, which finds the wolfpack in Bangkok for Stu’s wedding. “It has to have some similarities to the first one because it is a sequel … No one said to the makers of Indiana Jones, ‘I can’t believe he has a whip again.’ … You want to be true to the characters but I think we have also upped the ante.”

Bottom line, Zach: Which film is better? “I have not made up my mind,” Galifianakis answered. “There are a couple of scenes in [Part II] that made me laugh so hard I cried, but I love the first one so much that I am not willing to throw it under the bus in order to promote this one like the rest of the guys. It holds a very special place in my heart.”
