Donald Trump announced yesterday that he would not seek the presidency, and today, the new question is, Why? Why did the real-estate titan and reality-TV star take his name out of the running for the Republican nomination? According to Anthony Baxter, he’s responsible for spoiling Trump’s potential campaign. The filmmaker, whose You’ve Been Trumped yet-unsold documentary chronicles a Scottish seaside resort’s fight against Trump’s planned golf course, told the Hollywood Reporter, “I do think Mr. Trump realized he would be under severe scrutiny if he actually ran for president, and our film had become part of that dialogue.”

I hope to someday see Baxter’s film, which premiered in Toronto earlier this month, but I’m not sure it’s become “part of that dialogue.” So the question remains: Why did Trump walk away? It’s not like him to flinch from a confrontation, especially at the very moment when his rival, President Obama, seemed to be provoking him. His explanation at NBC’s upfronts, that Celebrity Apprentice is his priority because “we’ve raised tens of millions,” rings rather hollow. A billionaire like Donald Trump spends that kind of money on haircare. We can speculate for hours, but I think the NBC executive had it correct when he told EW last month that Trump’s candidacy was “a stunt.”

What’s your best guess?
