It wasn’t easy to ignore the final season of Friday Night Lights when it originally aired this winter on DirecTV. I work for an entertainment website after all. Heck, Ken Tucker, he of the splendid FNL recaps, works down the hall from me. There are only so many times you can stick your fingers in your ears and yell incoherently while running in the opposite direction from your co-workers when they chat about Dillon football before they begin to think there’s something seriously wrong with you. But I did it. I was disciplined. I managed to remain completely oblivious of season 5’s developments and ultimate conclusion, and I was looking forward to be rewarded with 13 weeks of Dillon triumph and a bittersweet farewell.

But then I learned this: Season 5 of Friday Night Lights is available on DVD 10 days before it premieres on NBC! Oh, NBC Universal, why do you toy with me so? I waited for you, and now you reward my loyalty and willpower with yet another, even greater test! You’re telling me that I can enjoy the last season of Friday Night Lights as I’ve long intended to, savoring each individual episode as the kickoff of a stupendous weekend. Or, I can throw away months of self-restraint and gorge on the entire season in one marathon viewing block when the DVD arrives April 5. This is, to me, a formidable temptation worthy of the Easter season, and I’m not sure I’m strong enough to resist. I want so much to savor this season in the proper viewing rhythm that was intended. But I’m just a mere gluttonous mortal!

How will you consume this season of Friday Night Lights (if you haven’t already done so)? Be strong, PopWatchers.
