STARRING Freida Pinto, Hiam Abbass, and Willem Dafoe
DIRECTED BY Julian Schnabel

Director Julian Schnabel’s latest focuses on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict as seen through the eyes of a teenage girl, the eponymous Miral (Frieda Pinto). When Miral, who has grown up sheltered within the walls of a Jerusalem orphanage, goes to teach at a refugee camp in 1988, she falls for the radical Hani (Omar Metwally) and finds herself drawn into his world of political activism and Intifada. Schnabel, whose Jewish roots run deep — his mother was president of Zionist women’s organization Hadassah in 1948, when the state of Israel was created — has said that he saw the film as an opportunity to explore the conflict from the other side. Vanessa Redgrave and Willem Dafoe round out the cast.
