All That Is Bitter and Sweet


If you’re hoping for Hollywood dish, you’ll probably find Judd’s memoir more bitter than sweet. The actress, 42, spotlights three parts of her life: her childhood, spent in the shadow of a self-involved mom and a smothering sister (country stars Naomi and Wynonna Judd); her HIV/AIDS activism; and her battle with depression. Judd’s tales of suffering — she recounts brutal fights with her family and third-world horrors observed on humanitarian missions — are harrowing. But All That Is Bitter and Sweet‘s lack of any narrative arc makes this personal journey feel oddly distant. B
