Sony Pictures has confirmed to EW that Tom Hanks is attatched to play Richard Phillips, the cargo ship Captain who was kidnapped by Somali priates in 2009, in a feature film based on Phillips’ memoirs, A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea. (Deadline first reported the story.) Phillips offered himself up as a hostage in order to save his crew, and was ultimately freed by SEAL snipers in a daring high-seas rescue. Sony has not yet announced a director for the film, and a final deal is not yet in place for Hanks.
