Here’s the theatrical trailer for the first Pixar sequel not named Toy Story. Yup, we’re talking Cars 2, and if the new trailer’s any indication, the film’s assured to be a visual delight. The opening seconds are drenched with some surprisingly sinister imagery — Blade Runner, anyone? — and then the trailer segues into the epileptic neon lights of Tokyo. Cars 2 finds Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) competing in the World Grand Prix, with races in Tokyo, London, and on the Italian Riviera. Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) tags along and winds up getting involved in an international espionage mission with British agents Finn McMissile (Michael Caine) and Holley Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer). I’ll admit that I was initially hesitant about the idea of a Cars sequel. The first Cars movie, while by all means a critical and commercial success, also received the least enthusiastic reviews of any Pixar feature. But by this point in the history of cinema, you never bet against Pixar, and any movie that takes a crack at the Japanese washlet toilet — while referencing anime — instantly gets added to my “must-see” list. Check out the trailer below:
