The music awards show is never easy to predict, but this year brought two unusually huge surprises, even by Grammy standards. Consider us shocked.

This little-known 26-year-old jazz bassist and singer won Best New Artist over Justin Bieber and Drake with a barely heard album, Chamber Music Society, released last August. We think Spalding, who’s pals with Prince, is well worth checking out. But Bieber fans disagree: After her victory, they tore into her on Twitter and hacked her Wikipedia page.

As frontman Win Butler said at the podium, ”What the hell?” Album of the Year typically goes to massive stars (U2, the Dixie Chicks) or fogy-friendly veterans like Steely Dan. Nobody expected the Montreal indie-rock band to score the night’s biggest award, although we had hoped they’d take the prize: EW named The Suburbs one of the 10 best albums of 2010.
