LCD Soundsystem head honcho James Murphy appeared on The Colbert Report last night to perform “I Can Change” and talk about his recent announcement that the band’s forthcoming Madison Square Garden show will be their last.

In truth(-iness), host Colbert was so busy cracking wise (“Retirees get very few honey-dipped coeds waiting in the wings for them!”) that Murphy wasn’t given much of a chance to say anything at all. But the singer did explain that “it seems like the right thing to do. I’m 41. At a certain point, I think it gets embarrassing.” When asked about his future plans, the singer deadpanned that he really likes making coffee and, more seriously, pointed out that he still has a label to run.

Personally, I’m hoping Murphy is retiring to pursue his long held dream of competing in the Ultimate Fighting Championship—“I still wanna fight!” he told me four years ago—although, alas, he may now be too long in the tooth for that as well.

What do you think about Murphy’s retiring of the LCD Soundsystem name? Are you going to the Madison Square Garden show or one of their other farewell concerts? Let us know!
