There still hasn’t really been a good movie based on a videogame — trust us, we made a list — but 1995’s Mortal Kombat is one of the least-bad films in the genre. Unfortunately, the 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is one of the worst movies ever made, and especially considering the insane mythology that runs throughout the videogame series, I’ve always felt like MK deserved another chance at adaptation. My wish has kind of been answered: According to a press release from Warner Bros., Mortal Kombat will be adapted into a web series starring Jeri Ryan (who played Star Trek: Voyager‘s Seven of Nine) and Michael Jai White (who played Spawn in Spawn Black Dynamite in Black Dynamite).

They’re actually reprising their roles from an unofficial viral video that circulated around the internet last year, a passion project of director Kevin Tancharoen (who directed the Fame remake). Tancharoen will be working on the new web series, which is currently filming, and will presumably hit the internet somewhere around mid-April, when the newest Mortal Kombat game is released.

PopWatchers, interested in the geek-tastic cast of this web reboot? This can’t possibly be worse than the Kristanna Loken-starring Mortal Kombat: Konquest, can it?
