MTV is taking Snooki, The Situation, and the rest offshore in the reality hit's next season. But with spin-offs looming, how much longer can the show continue?
The ratings for this season of Jersey Shore have been bigger than Snooki’s pouf. The MTV reality juggernaut is surprising its network by achieving record-size numbers with a weekly average of 8.5 million viewers. Shore even beat powerhouse American Idol on Jan. 20 by one million viewers in the 12-34 demo, MTV’s target audience. ”It’s a phenomenon — no question about it,” says programming head David Janollari. Now the network is taking these tanned phenoms and their livers to Italy in the spring in the hope of airing new episodes as early as this summer. ”We’re scouting right now,” says Chris Linn, EVP of programming. ”They’ve often thrown around Italy as ‘Oh, wouldn’t that be funny if we went to Italy?’ Vinny has family there but has actually never been. It makes sense. The plan is that they will be based somewhere [in Italy] and then they may take day trips.” MTV is also considering spin-offs for Pauly D and pals Snooki and J-Woww. ”We’re looking at all of their lives,” explains Linn. ”Pauly’s just happened to come together quickly. And J-Woww and Snooki genuinely are really good friends, and they’re kind of like the real-life Laverne and Shirley.” The network would like to keep the Shore gang partying for as long as possible. ”I would love it to go several more years, personally,” says Janollari. ”I think it can. The size of these numbers suggests that this is not going away anytime soon.”
The Spin-Off Situation
Mike ”The Situation” Sorrentino
The Situation has said he’d like to act in the future. Hopefully he’s better at that than ballroom dancing.
Nicole ”Snooki” Polizzi
What does Snooki do when she’s not blackout drunk? A possible spin-off would address that very question!
Jenni ”J-Woww” Farley
J-Woww will be paired with Snooki if their show moves forward. Obviously they wouldn’t need much in the way of a wardrobe budget.
Paul ”DJ Pauly D” Delvecchio
He of the windproof hair is also a DJ — that would be the focus of his proposed show.
