That’s an attractive result for the Sony film, which cost only $8 million to produce. The Roommate, about a college freshman (Friday Night Lights‘ Minka Kelly) who discovers that her dorm-mate (Gossip Girl‘s Leighton Meester) is the kind of deranged individual you’d commonly find in a PG-13 horror movie, is on pace for a weekend take of about $16 million. The film will undoubtedly stumble on Super Bowl Sunday, as more than 100 million Americans tune in to the watch the war reenactment. But The Roommate should hold up better than its competition, thanks to its ability to appeal to a young female crowd, some of which may actually be looking for something to do Sunday evening that’s not related to football.

Sanctum, on the other hand, will hardly see any of its male target audience during the big game. The R-rated cave-diving thriller collected only $3.6 million on Friday, and is headed for a debut weekend of $10 million at the most. The $30 million picture, which Universal and Relativity Media paid $12 million to purchase, was executive produced by James Cameron and shot using the same 3-D technology the filmmaker developed for Avatar. But Cameron’s name, which was featured in Sanctum‘s advertising to such an extent that at least one poor soul had to have walked into the movie thinking that Cameron directed it, nevertheless failed to attract many fanboys.

The rest of the top five consisted of holdovers. The romantic comedy No Strings Attached slipped 34 percent, collecting $2.9 million, while the Oscar front-runner The King’s Speech fell a mere 20 percent, bringing in $2.3 million. The horror film The Rite, however, collapsed 64 percent for $1.9 million. Check back here on Sunday for the complete box office report.
