Ostensibly the story of a friendship between two smart, diffident young people fumbling toward adulthood, The Intimates actually keeps its titular pair, Maize and Robbie, in their own discrete emotional worlds, as unknowable to each other as they are to themselves. Still, Sassone unfolds their parallel coming-of-age stories — the inevitable romantic fumblings and sexual awakenings, the ugly apartments and awful first jobs — with a delicate, melancholy knowingness. Harried real estate assistant Maize muses: ”Apparently, people didn’t look at pictures anymore and ask if they were lifelike. They looked at their lives and compared them to images they’d seen somewhere.” B+
