Despite the presence of Ryan Reynolds, this horrifying little gem of a thriller has made only about $1 million since it hit (a few) theaters last September. No surprise there. The entire thing — and I do mean the entire thing — takes place in a coffin. Reynolds plays an American trucker working in Iraq who’s been kidnapped and buried alive. With time and oxygen running out, he spends 90 desperate minutes using his cell phone to call for help, and, in one particularly nightmarish sequence, employs his lighter to fend off a snake. Buried isn’t for everyone, including some critics. But to me it’s a fascinating, gripping exercise in filmmaking, and in a performance vibrating with primal fear and unspeakable frustration, Reynolds holds you captive from start to finish. A?
