Alamo Drafthouse's new series of Guillermo del Toro posters: An exclusive sneak peek!
- Movie
Feast your eyes, Guillermo del Toro fans. To the left — and in larger form at the end of the post — you will find an exclusive sneak peek at the new posters for a pair of the Mexican auteur's movies, Hellboy II and vampire sequel Blade II.
The images come courtesy of the folks at famed Austin, Tx., movie palace The Alamo Drafthouse. The Drafthouse's collectible art boutique arm, Mondo, has previously produced an array of new posters for old movies, including some highly stylish items that commemorated the 2010 Alamo Drafthouse/Rolling Roadshow Tour. It is now launching a "Director's Series" line that will commemorate the work of specific filmmakers, with Del Toro the first artist to be given the treatment. The new poster for Blade II goes on sale December 2. Cronos, The Devil's Backbone, Pan's Labyrinth, and the two Hellboy movies will follow.
The posters were designed with input from the man himself. "We've had a relationship with Guillermo for a while," says Alamo Drafthouse CEO Tim League. "He lived here after he made Cronos and became a fixture, if you will, at the theater. Justin Ishmael, the head of Mondo, pitched him on the idea. Guillermo decided to not just approve the series but also serve as the point for approving the actual design. He's said, 'Yes, I like that,' or 'No, that doesn't look too much like Ron Perlman,' or whatever."
League says there are plans afoot to showcase other directors but that he is "not in a position right now" to confirm any names. He also admits subsequent auteurs may not receive quite such a comprehensive treatment as that given del Toro, whose entire filmography as a feature director is getting a poster with the exception of the (to be honest, not all that great) Mimic. "We're not going to be absolutely completist," says the CEO. "We're big fans of Takashi Miike, for example. But the man's made 90 movies. We can't make a 90 film series!"
