Your guide to six of the 'Dead''s main characters.

Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln)
Is the idealistic lawman more devoted to family or do-gooding? Such is Rick’s defining tension. The model for his character: Gary Cooper, High Noon. Psst! We hear a big secret gets whispered in Rick’s ear during the finale.

Shane (Jon Bernthal)
Rick’s best bud and loyal No. 2 has tasted being No. 1 — and likes it. Uh-oh. Even Bernthal’s mom didn’t approve of the Lori/Shane adultery. ”She texted me, ‘How dare you be in the woods with another man’s wife!”’

Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus)
”If 10 zombies attacked, Daryl is good for six of them,” says Reedus of his fierce, crossbow-wielding character. He resents the survivors for abandoning his big bro, Merle — but he’s slowly bonding with them too.

Lori Grimes (Sarah Wayne Callies)
Rick’s fiery, frustrated, frog-legs-hating wife. Believing Rick dead, she started knocking boots with Shane. ”Her primary care is her son’s safety and protecting his innocence,” says Callies. ”She’s a powerhouse.”

Andrea (Laurie Holden)
Gutsy and frank, Andrea has a close rapport with wise, paternal Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn); they’ll become even closer as the series progresses. Her little sis, Amy, just got zombie-chomped. Does she have the strength to put her down?

Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker)
Season 1 has left us with plenty of intriguing loose ends, like one-handed racist Merle. Both he and Good Dad With a Zombie Wife Morgan (Lennie James) remain MIA…for now.
